The time it takes for hair to lock into dreadlocks can vary from six months to more than two years, depending on hair texture. Continuously interlacing hair can damage the scalp and cause roots to thin over time. Dreadlocks have a history in many cultures, and are often associated with Rastafarian beliefs. In Rastafarianism, dreadlocks are used to separate believers from the rest of society. Some believe that dreadlocks have a spiritual connection, connecting wearers to Jah (God) and his mystical power.
